The street of Suur-Sõjamäe runs from the Ülemiste intersection to the intersection with Lagedi tee outside Tallinn. A railway runs parallel to the street along the entire length of it on one side, and the other side is bordered by the runway of Tallinn Airport. The asphalt concrete pavement of the two-lane road was in poor condition due to the heavy traffic load, riddled with potholes and patching. The road markings were worn or completely missing. Over the years, Suur-Sõjamäe Street was reconstructed section by section: In 2005, K-Projekt designed the reconstruction of the street from intersection with the Ülemiste shopping centre up to Lõõtsa Street (0.67 km in total) and, in 2006, from Lõõtsa Street to Kesk-Sõjamäe Street (1.24 km). In 2014, the last section, running in a straight 1.7-kilometre-long line from about 200 metres before the extension of J. Smuuli tee from the direction of Tartu maantee up to the border of the city. Suur-Sõjamäe Street was designed as a three-lane road, with one lane in each direction, plus a left-turn lane. A new, traffic light regulated solution was created for the intersection of Smuuli tee and Suur-Sõjamäe Street, and a new shared-use path was also designed.
